Personal Statment

The biggest problem I’ve ever faced so far is that whether I am my parents’ son. I’m a senior high student in Nanjing, China. My name is Harrison OuYang which is a rare name in China since it’s made up of two words (Most people have one). My friends just call me Harry for short.

When you first meet me, you may consider me as an introverted boy who prefer to hide in the corner to read to talk to others. The truth is, I am. Compared with other peer kids, I’m more like a quiet person, however, takes a little time to warm up. The most frequent thing I hear from my parents is how greatly my personality has changed because I used to tear my house apart. This makes them doubt whether I’m truly their son. The change does affect my friendship. I don’t have too many friends due to my shyness. Although if you hang out with me for a while, you will realize that I’m indeed an active person which totally differs from what your first expression told you.

Anyway, how does a slow-adopter like me manage to open up myself? It certainly takes time. In retrospect, there is one thing that, to me, has the greatest influence on that transformation—my experience in MMUN. I attend the MMUN New York Conference in 2017. To be frank, it was the first time that I have ever gone abroad without my parents, though I was accompanied by a bunch of other kids. Basically, as you can tell from its name, Montessori Model United Nations, the event was a simulation of the real UN. There, not only have I broadened my horizon, I made several foreign friends! However, the thing that made me proud the most would be the time that I was praised as the ‘’Oscar Best Actor’’ by the whole group, mostly the girls, in the acting class we did. I bet you understand how satisfying that was!

By the way, football and music are the two things that I could give my life to. Though it may sound a little extreme, it’s true. They are like the lighthouse in my life, brightening my way beyond and diving out all the darkness.

So, up to now, I believe you all have a general idea of what kind of ‘’shy’’ person I’m. Moving on, I would like to share my life goals with you!

First of all, I am a big fan of science, especially astronomy; as well as a film lover, which leads to the fact that I always come up with a bunch of peculiar questions from any film I have seen. For instance, Avatar made me wonder how land could float upon the sky; why the tip of an iceberg sank The Titanic or how on earth did Cooper travel to the fifth dimension through a black hole.

We often say that learning is all about asking questions and the process of how you find out the truth matters the most; I could not agree more. Nevertheless, due to my family background, every time I turn to my parents, the only answer I get is ‘’ Go look it up for yourself’’, which, most of the time, leads to a dead end. Anyway, this will not keep me from seeking the truth. In comparison, my teachers played an essential role in my exploration of the unknown.

Ever since I was a child, I was fascinated by the universe. And when I looked up into the endless space, I would be amazed by how small and trivial humans are. Recently, I have been deeply attracted by the study of the black hole. What’s more, under the influence of Professor Hawking, one of the most respectable and authoritative scientists of all time, I have never been more determined to figure out the hidden secret of this annoying hole which has held countless scientists back from the truth. For instance, how exactly is a black hole formed; what is inside it; the concept of ‘’wormhole’’ and its connection with quantum physics, as known as ‘’Quantum Entanglement’’, which finally led to that famous debate between Einstein and Bohr.

As a result, the short-term goal I set for myself is to get a solid base for all fundamental knowledge of all related subjects and get into my ideal university.

After that, I can finally devote myself to studying outer space. Hopefully, reaching this goal will do some good to the entire human race.
