The biggest problem I’ve ever faced so far is that whether I am my parents’ son. I’m a senior high student in Nanjing, China. My name is Harrison OuYang which is a rare name in China since it’s made up of two words (Most people have one). My friends just call me Harry for short.

When you first meet me, you may consider me as an introverted boy who prefer to hide in the corner to read to talk to others. The truth is, I am. Compared with other peer kids, I’m more like a quiet person, however, takes a little time to warm up. The most frequent thing I hear from my parents is how greatly my personality has changed because I used to tear my house apart. This makes them doubt whether I’m truly their son. The change does affect my friendship. I don’t have too many friends due to my shyness. Although if you hang out with me for a while, you will realize that I’m indeed an active person which totally differs from what your first expression told you.

Anyway, how does a slow-adopter like me manage to open up myself? It certainly takes time. In retrospect, there is one thing that, to me, has the greatest influence on that transformation—my experience in MMUN. I attend the MMUN New York Conference in 2017. To be frank, it was the first time that I have ever gone abroad without my parents, though I was accompanied by a bunch of other kids. Basically, as you can tell from its name, Montessori Model United Nations, the event was a simulation of the real UN. There, not only have I broadened my horizon, I made several foreign friends! However, the thing that made me proud the most would be the time that I was praised as the ‘’Oscar Best Actor’’ by the whole group, mostly the girls, in the acting class we did. I bet you understand how satisfying that was!

By the way, football and music are the two things that I could give my life to. Though it may sound a little extreme, it’s true. They are like the lighthouse in my life, brightening my way beyond and diving out all the darkness.

So, up to now, I believe you all have a general idea of what kind of ‘’shy’’ person I’m. Moving on, I would like to share my life goals with you!

First of all, I am a big fan of science, especially astronomy; as well as a film lover, which leads to the fact that I always come up with a bunch of peculiar questions from any film I have seen. For instance, Avatar made me wonder how land could float upon the sky; why the tip of an iceberg sank The Titanic or how on earth did Cooper travel to the fifth dimension through a black hole.

We often say that learning is all about asking questions and the process of how you find out the truth matters the most; I could not agree more. Nevertheless, due to my family background, every time I turn to my parents, the only answer I get is ‘’ Go look it up for yourself’’, which, most of the time, leads to a dead end. Anyway, this will not keep me from seeking the truth. In comparison, my teachers played an essential role in my exploration of the unknown.

Ever since I was a child, I was fascinated by the universe. And when I looked up into the endless space, I would be amazed by how small and trivial humans are. Recently, I have been deeply attracted by the study of the black hole. What’s more, under the influence of Professor Hawking, one of the most respectable and authoritative scientists of all time, I have never been more determined to figure out the hidden secret of this annoying hole which has held countless scientists back from the truth. For instance, how exactly is a black hole formed; what is inside it; the concept of ‘’wormhole’’ and its connection with quantum physics, as known as ‘’Quantum Entanglement’’, which finally led to that famous debate between Einstein and Bohr.

As a result, the short-term goal I set for myself is to get a solid base for all fundamental knowledge of all related subjects and get into my ideal university.

After that, I can finally devote myself to studying outer space. Hopefully, reaching this goal will do some good to the entire human race.

Python Activity

In the recent python activity held in TP, I got 2 tasks. The first one is to calculate volumes of different shapes according to people’s choice.

After one hour of struggling, I finally figured it out with the help of teacher.(I’m still a beginner (: ) And the program looks like this:

As for the second task, I was asked to write a program to use the Monte Carlo method to calculate the area of any irregular shape. However, because I was still a rookie, my teacher eased the task and I only had to calculate pi using this method.

Mathematics contests

As we all know, if you want to apply for a ‘not so bad’ university abroad, one thing you ought to contain in your personal statement would be the contests or competitions you have been taken just to show how extrodinary and excellent you are. Up to now since I got in high school, I’ve taken 3 international contests, all about maths, including UKMT, AMC10/12, CEMC(Euclid) As you may notice, these 3 contests are from 3 different countries which are the UK, America and Canada respectively. Anyway, there are similarities, but also quite some differences. So, I ‘m going to share my experiences of each contests first. Then I’ll write about my understanding to all these 3 various contests.

  • UKMT

    In October in 2020, which is last year, I took part in the very first academic contests in high school. Though it’s compulsory anyway, I still took it really seriously due to what it meant to me, to find out where I’m at among all the students worldwide.

    To prepare the exam, most of us chose to do loads of pastpapers so that we could get familiar with the question types. If you ask me now if it’s useful, I would say that it’s the most reliable approach for most of international contests due to the fact that the main theme of problems won’t fluctuate too much.

    The exam was taken online at the computer room in our school. While I was sitting at the computer, I literally couldn’t tell how nervous I was for my poor preparation.( I only did 3 sets of papers) As the everyone was settled, the exam officially began. I then tried my best to stay calm and get my mind straight and focused on the problems. At first, the questions were like a piece of cake to me, however, they got more and more complicated as I moved on. Technically, it was more time-consuming than difficult.

    After one hour of struggling, I managed to finish 23 problems out of 25, but got quite confused about the last two. Anyway, as long as I know that I did my best, the final result won’t bother me that much.

    Though I only got Gold at last while one of my friends got a even better award.( I forgot the name, but he was the only one who got that award throughout the whole grade.) I’m now planning to take it next year!

  • AMC10/12

    I took the two AMC tests this year. Compared with UKMT, it was obviously much harder. Because of this, teachers in IB department specially introduced a small class for those who were to take the exams not only for IB students, but also students from Cambridge department. During the 2- months training,

    I was kind of overwhelmed by the pressure of the test duo to the fact that I found myself lacking of maths thinking. Seeing others around me solving those problems like they were nothing, I couldn’t be more anxious. However, there was nothing I could do. I had to make sure I got the points for problems that were within my capability.

    Same with UKMT, AMC exams were taken online at home using zoom. I, like most of my classmates, took both AMC10 and AMC12 of ascending hardness. At the beginning of the test, I already felt the hostility of the exam to me. All I thought about was to solve as much problems as I could. When it came to ones that I totally did not understand, guessing seemed to be the only option since I still got 20% of possibility to get the full mark.

    However, you can all imagine how my result is like. Like all my classmates, I didn’t got the promotion to AIME exam. I do get a Merit for AMC10 anyway. So, that’s satisfying enough for me at the moment. Like UKMT, I’m now determined to get a higher score next year!!

  • CEMC (Euclid)

    Just in this April, CEMC exam took place in our school. Like the two above, it’s also about mathematics. The difference is that it was off line which means we had to do it with real paper and pen. To me, I found it much more relaxing in this way for you can make drafts and do the calculating on the paper, according to my own habits.

    In comparison, the first 7 problems were quite friendly. Like always, the last three were really tricky and hard to cope with. During the exam, all you can see and hear was students writing equations and the knock on the calculators.

    When the paper was due, I felt like I did quite ok, I could get at least 7 right. However, since the exam was finished, all I can do is to wait for the result.

  • Analysis

    After taking all 3 tests, I found that there are quite l lot differences.

    First of all, is their different ‘nationalities’. UKMT is from the UK, AMC is from America and CEMC is from Canada. Moving on to the forms and marking schemes. All 3 exams are designed for students above grade 10. For UKMT, the exam lasts for 1 hour with 25 MCQs. As for AMC, it has exams for different levels. For instance, AMC10 is for students below grade 10 and AMC12 is for those below grade12. Moreover, the questions are also MCQs but with 1 more option to choose.( A B C D E) This sure reduces the chance for students like me who want to gain without pain. What’s more, it only lasts for 75 minutes which makes it even harder. Luckily, it’s unique marking system may make up for some of its hardness. Generally, if you get 1 question right, you get 6 points; if you don’t make any choice and leave it blanked, you’ll still get 1.5 points; If you get it wrong, you get 0 points. The total is 150. It seems that you may benefit a lot through this system, but if you think a little deeper, it’s a probability problem.

    You’ll need to think twice whether you want to make the bet to guess. Lastly, for CEMC, its 10 problems in 150 minutes. However, those problems all need processes shown. It is certainly a better way to test your logical thinking and maths writing.

    Despite all aspects that differ from each tests, there are certain similarities. As mentioned above, they all cater for students in about grade 10 since it’s questions are mainly divided into 4 sections: algebra, geometry, probability and number theories.

    Since it’s a contest after all, there will be questions you can’t solve. So, don’t take it as a big deal if you don’t get a good result as you expected. Life is long, there’s always new knowledge coming to brain. Just keep working hard, read more books, practice more and get back to field next year!

Sports Meeting

After 1 year, I finally went back to my middle school!

In October, 2020, the annual sports meeting in JinLing High School was held in JinLing High School HeXi Campuse in which I have spent my last 3 years. To be frank, from the day I got into JinLing High, I haven’t spent a single day not missing my old life in hexi. As a result, I couldn’t be more excited for this trip due to the fact that plenty of my middle school friends left in hexi and I got the opportunity to see them again and catch up with them.

On the first day of the sports meeting, the playground, which was even larger than a standard one, was filled with students and teachers from jinling high. you can see all classes were settled in different sections of the field with their costumes on. In the very beginning of the meeting, there was a performance from each of the classes which was successfully pulled off. After that, the competition officially began.

Though I haven’t got a chance to compete for my class, because of the injure in my legs, and back, and feet(you may call me a glass person), there were still ways for me to participate. Every time a new competition started, you could always see me hang on the fencing and cheering for the athletes, no matter which class they were from, just to show the sports spirits. Moreover, in order to make the best use out of me, not only have I encouraged our players on the blob, some of my friends and I also helped with carrying water supplies, bought by our caring parents, to make sure that all players are well hydrated so that they can provide with their best performance. Apart from all these, it was those astonishing players that brought pride for our class who we should all thank for.

The sports meeting lasted for 3 days. During this period of time, we got to experienced what it feels like to work as one unit with people you have newly met. It’s the first team activity that we have had so far as well. Overall, to me, it was quite an unforgettable memory since I spent almost a whole day with some of my old friends. (We played football together!)

Anyway, I’m looking forward to carry on with my adventure with these new community in the late future!!!

I first learned about Spellingbee competition in a college entrance course.

In the first few rounds of the preliminary round, I was selected into the team for the final match against China and the United States, which was probably due to luck. After the euphoria, there was a lot of pressure. After a long preparation, the day of the game finally arrived. Here, the competition has long been called “the match between China and the United States.”It goes without saying that Cambridge has never won China or the US since the tournament began. With such a heavy burden on our shoulders, we stepped onto the stage with nervous and mixed feelings. This is a grade credibility game, we want to do our best, not the best. In the short but long one hour, Cambridge students, who were behind by 40 points, did not give up and turned the tide in adversity. Finally, they surpassed China and the United States by more than 200 points and won the first champion of Cambridge class since the beginning of the competition.

I’ve had my first one, but this one is different. The audience from the original full of expectations, to bow the head sigh, and from the hope to see the final back to exceed the score of cheering caper. After this match, I deeply realized the importance of teamwork and the necessity of preparation before the match. Then there is the power of confidence. As the motto of Harvard says, “Every great miracle begins with the power of faith.”In the sea of life, there is no ship without injury!

In addition, as an upperclassman, I would also like to give some advice on English word learning to the next class of junior students:

First of all, if you want to memorize words well, the foundation is the priority. The moment you choose the International Department, you need to realize that your vocabulary will be three times or more than that of your classmates in the general high school. Therefore, daily accumulation is very important. Words can not deliberately recite, to find more in life, more practice. Personally, I can say that 3 to 40 percent of my vocabulary comes from American TV series, movies and music. Therefore, taking a look after learning can not only relieve the pressure of study, but also greatly enhance the vocabulary and language sense. Won’t you kill two birds with one stone?It will also be easier to prepare.

“Gentleman nature is not different also, good at fake in the material also”.In the process of preparing for war, the mastery of tools is also indispensable. Take the electronic dictionary and paper dictionary with you. Different dictionaries have different advantages, so we should learn to learn from each other. Of course, you can also make cards to help you remember. In short, find the method that you are used to and maximize your efficiency.

Is there any shortcut to memorize words?Don’t tell me, there is. Before learning a new word, you need to know not only how it sounds and what it means, but also where it came from. Most English words have a fixed root. With the help of a dictionary, combined with habits, proper memory, and accumulated some common prefix and suffix, you can do well in the competition. In addition to this, you need to be able to synthesize words and look for connections between similar words. You will gain a lot.

Finally, there is the age-old question of pre-match psychology. As long as there is a game, there will always be a winner or a loser. It is very important to have a reasonable goal and a complete plan, which is also the basis of having a relaxed and open-minded attitude. Nervousness will be your worst enemy. How many people prepare very well before the race, but at the end because of nervousness, the brain blank, and finally missed the victory?Don’t pay too much attention to his opinions and comments. Be yourself and be more confident. Because nothing is “impossible” to a confident person.

I hope our BKING spirit will continue to be passed on to the next class of Cambridge students, and continue to create brilliance for the Cambridge class!
